Before setting out on his first sea voyage in 1999, he completed his first year of training in Mumbai. He traveled around the world over the following twelve years and advanced to the position of Master Mariner. As the captain, he is ultimately in charge of the ship's operations, including its safe navigation, cleanliness, and seaworthiness, the safe handling of all cargo, the management of all crew members, the inventory of the ship's cash and stores, and the upkeep of the ship's certificates and documentation.

Captain Vinod Kumar accepted a position in 2012 as GM-Traffic and Vessel Operations with Nor Control Kongsberg Ltd., which brought him ashore.
